Weibliche allegorische Figur mit Lorbeerkranz und Lanze

This drawing with a former attribution to an anonymous Italian Mannerist artist was acquired on the Austrian art market in 1954 (April 29, Dorotheum).  Otto Benesch was the first one to attribute the sheet to Vignon in 1958 (inscribe on cardboard support), followed by (Rosenberg, p. 290, Anm. 19, Pl. 26a). Thuilier gave the drawing to Jacques Bellange. Eckhart Knab (Knab, Widauer 1993, F. 152) published the drawing as by Claude Vignon. The attribution of the Albertina drawing to Vignon was discarded by Paola Pacht Bassani ( in: Claude Vignon. 1593-1670, Paris 1992, R127 with wrong illustration).

According to an email correspondence (20th October 2004) between Sue Welsh Reed, at the time Curator of Prints and Drawings in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Albertina's curator Heinz Widauer, Reed ascribes the sheet to the German artist Jakob Matthias Weyer (1623, Hamburg - Hamburg 1670): "It's a very attractive drawing, though I was not in favor of the attribution to Vignon. After seeing several drawings in the hands of a dealer as well as others illustrated here and there, we feel that a firm attribution can be made - to Jakob Matthias Weyer (Hamburg, 1623-1670)."  Reed also compares the sheet with a red chalk standing figure by Weyer in the Staatliche Sammlung Munich, Inv. 11034 which in her opinion resembles the Vienna drawing.
