EssayPierre Rosenberg suggested the drawing to date from the 18th century. He thought of a draughtsman from the circle of Francois-André Vincent or Antoine-Francois Callet. The present drawing's virtuoso foreshortenings, sotto-in-su effects and the style which is a bit reminsicent of Italian models, due to the artist's sojourn in Rome at the Academie de France, may point to Callet. The Albertina preserves several drawings by this artist (see Inv. 12642, Inv. 12643, Inv. 15351, Inv. 17542) Especially the sketchy chalk of the Inv. 17542 and its facial types of the figures may point to the loose chalk stroke and the faces in the present drawings recto as well as the treatment of the figures' garment in regard of the present drawing's reverse may faintly point to Callet's draughtmanship.
