Pink Mouse 2

Gottfried Helnwein

2016

Fantasy and comic book figures feature in most phases of Helnwein’s production. Particularly Walt Disney’s characters, familiar to the artist from Mickey Mouse books since his childhood, are recurring protagonists of his work. Getting to know the inhabitants of Entenhausen was a kind of liberation and revelation for Helnwein: the figures introduced him to a completely strange, new and colourful world which he felt to be a sheet anchor in the sad everyday world of his childhood in bleak post-war Austria. He also made Mickey Mouse a protagonist of his works, often portraying him as a monstrous character with bared teeth like in Pink Mouse 2. Helnwein suggests a hidden dark side at the bottom of Mickey’s deceitful grin, hinting at the evil that may be hidden behind beautiful appearances: “I think that comics are really great and important art,” the artist says. “What I also learnt from comic books was the possibility of communicating something with pictures.”
