Text

“A painting is an organized whole. A construct of correlations between forms, lines, and colored surfaces, on which their meaning emerges or dissolves.” This is how the grand seigneur of painting Pierre Soulages described his program as an artist in 1948, which he continues to abide by to this day. Black is the color—or rather the non-color—with which he has worked exclusively since 1979. For the French artist with Celtic origins and a penchant for prehistoric art, black is the origin of painting. Soulages is considered the main representative of the École de Paris, which forms an antithesis to American Abstract Expressionism. Instead of emotional expressiveness, Soulages pursues a form of abstraction in the tradition of concrete art.

Light vibrations, open brushstrokes, smooth, modulated, glossy, and matte surfaces alternate, generating high contrast. Black, to which the artist had already intuitively resorted as a child, does not mark the endpoint of colorfulness—his ultrablack, as the Outrenoir paintings also suggest, is a beginning: Black absorbs and reflects in equal measure, is transgressive. Commenting on his way of capturing light with only one pigment color, the multiple documenta participant emphasizes that color is always the color of light and that it is light he paints. In the reduction of means, this monochromaticity unfolds its maximum radiance: The exclusive color is both concept and material, which—in countless refractions of light and manipulations with brooms, brushes, wooden sticks, and pieces of rubber—stands not only for the autonomy of art but also for the zero point of representation. Soulages’s painting disallows illusionistic content. He does not strive to simulate reality but rather focuses on the aesthetics of the material. With a pastose application of paint, creating grooves and furrows in the pictorial surface, he reveals to the viewer the immediate and haptic dimension of art. Soulages firmly believes that painting means taking a risk and always seeking the unexpected.
