Bildnis meiner Mutter (in ihrem 72. Lebensjahr)

Nicht einmal drei Jahre nachdem Rudolf Wacker dieses Porträt seiner Mutter gemalt hat, schreibt er 1929 nach deren Tod: „Ich bin vor Schmerz wie an ein Kreuz genagelt.“ All das und noch vieles mehr ist in diesem Bild. Äußerlich ist das Gemälde dunkel, innerlich voller Licht. Äußerlich zeigt das Gemälde mit seinem vorurteilsfreien Realismus, wozu die Neue Sachlichkeit imstande ist. Die innere Komposition ist aber so streng durch vertikale und horizontale Kräfte organisiert, dass sie dem Bild eine große ruhige Monumentalität verleiht.

Das Gemälde Bildnis meiner Mutter ist nicht dekorativ, sondern lässt tief in die Seele eines Menschen und in das Wesen einer Zeit blicken. Wacker malt dieses Meisterwerk inmitten der größten Wirtschaftskrise Österreichs nach dem Zerfall der Monarchie. Es sagt viel mehr aus als die direkte Gegenüberstellung der Zweiundsiebzigjährigen mit der Vierjährigen der Fotografie an der Wand.

Not even three years after Rudolf Wacker had painted this portrait of his mother, he wrote in 1929 after her death: “I feel like having been nailed to a cross with pain.” All this and much more is what this picture is about. Dark on the outside, full of light inside. On the outside, the painting’s unprejudiced realism shows what New Objectivity is capable of. The inner composition, however, is so strictly organized by vertical and horizontal forces that it lends the painting a great calm monumentality.

The painting Portrait of My Mother is not decorative but allows us to look deep into the soul of a person and into the essence of an era. Wacker painted this masterpiece in the midst of Austria’s greatest economic crisis after the collapse of the monarchy. It tells us much more than the direct juxtaposition of the seventy-two-year-old with the four-year-old in the photograph on the wall.
