Christus am Ölberg
Albrecht Dürer
1515
Dürer not only addressed the theme of The Agony in the Garden in all three of his printed cycles depicting the Passion of Christ but also in this single-leaf etching. Christ kneels with his hands raised in prayer on a stony ledge into which the date 1515 as well as the artist’s monogram appear to have been chiseled. Shown in strict profile with his head framed by a spark of light, Christ looks up at the chalice standing on a craggy rock alluded to in the Gospels: “Take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). No single light source can be identified, underscoring the scene’s tension-filled, pulsating atmosphere.
The genesis of the composition is documented in a number of drawings. Although the drawn mirror-inverted final draft in the Albertina is considerably larger than the final etching, it corresponds to the print down to small details and even anticipates the linework of the etching needle.
