Erinnerung an Assuan
Paul Klee
1930, 185 (C 5)
In late 1928 and early 1929, Paul Klee travelled through Egypt. The 1920s had seen a veritable Orient craze, particularly after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922, and Egypt had become a destination for educational travelers. Paul Klee’s interest in the Orient had already been awakened quite some years before; especially his stay in Tunis in 1914 was a decisive experience for his development as an artist.
The watercolor Souvenir of Assuan, 1930, 185 reflects the impressions of the Nile landscape in a very immediate manner. Unusually oblong-shaped, the sheet conveys the charms of a luxuriant vegetation’s contrasts, of the waters of the Nile, and of the surrounding desert regions in an atmospherically dense composition.Rahmenaußenmaß: 46,9 x 72,9 x 5 cm
